The CCFP hereby requires that all family physicians achieve the core competencies listed below:

Professional values, attitudes, behavior & ethics/professionalism skills/moral reasoning & ethical judgment

• commitment to carrying out professional responsibilities adherence to ethical principles, and sensibility to a diverse patient population.

Scientific foundations of medicine/medical knowledge

• possess the knowledge required for the solid scientific foundation of medicine and able to apply this knowlege to solve medical problems.
• understand the principles underlying medical decisions and actions, able to adapt to change with time and the context of his practice
• knowlege about established and evolving biomedical, clinical and cognate (e.g. Epidemiological and social behavioral) sciences and the application of this knowlege to patient care.

Communication skills/interpersonal and communication skills/effective communication

• create an environment in which mutual learning occurs with and among patients, their relatives, members of the health care team and colleagues, and the public through effective communications
• history-taking skills

Clinical skills/patient care/procedural skills/diagnosis & management

• diagnose and manage the care of patients in an effective and efficient way
• provide care that is compassionate, appropriate, and effective for the treatment of health problems and the promotion of health.

Population health and health systems/social community context of healthcare

• understand their role in protecting and promoting the health of a whole population and able to take appropriate actions
• understand the principles of health systems organization and their economic and legislative foundations
• basic understanding of the efficient and effective management of the health care system

Management of information

• understand the capabilities and limitations of information analysis and management of knowledge and able to use it for medical problem solving and decision-making.

Critical thinking and research/practice-based learning and improvement/ problem-solving

• ability to think scientifically and use scientific methods
• involves investigation and evaluation of their patient care, appraisal and assimilation of scientific evidence, and improvement in patient care.
